It uses an invisible infrared beam up to 60’ long. You can set it to a pleasant chime or a loud alarm depending on your use. For safety against intruders or training your dog you may want to use the loud alarm, and for alerting you of your child leaving the room, you may want to use the chime. You can set the chime to only go off once (like in a store) or go off continuously until you turn it off and the chime volume can be set to low, medium or high.
